Steve Salembier

Steve Salembier is an artist, actor, director and architect. He works at the intersection of visual arts and performance and addresses both the visual in the performing arts and the performative in the visual arts.

In his artistic practice, image and imagination, time and space are the main themes. In his work, image-forming is always central and it is the imagination of the viewer that invariably provides the meaning. Salembier is not so much interested in the image in itself, but more in the processes through which images come into being; in the context and the space in which images appear and disappear. His work thus focuses first and foremost on the gaze with which images are observed, on looking and experiencing.

Steve Salembier studied architecture at the Henry van de Velde Institute in Antwerp, where he later also worked for a long time as a lecturer in architectural practice. At the same time, he worked for Stéphane Beel & Lieven Achtergael architects, with whom he realised various public buildings and projects in the public space.

In 2014, he stopped working as an architect to further develop his artistic practice and realised a first installation performance under ‘Atelier Bildraum’ in a co-production of Kunstenwerkplaats Pianofabriek and Beursschouwburg Brussels. Bildraum won the Big in Belgium Award at Theater aan Zee in 2015 and the Total Theatre Award at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh in 2016.

In the meantime, Salembier has realised several projects that have been shown both at home and abroad. Since 2015 he has been working as Artist in Residence at LOD muziektheater and realised the productions In between violet & green, Reflector, icon and Babel. With Umwelt, Steve Salembier creates a new performance within LOD, together with musician Joachim Badenhorst.
