‘De dieren’ (‘The animals’) is a playful requiem for a dying ecosystem and a failing image of humanity. The performance takes you to the zoo, the place par excellence where the human project is implemented. The zoo is a place to watch. Where animals have to perform their otherness so that humankind can confirm himself. But in this zoo the boundaries have become blurred between who is human and who is animal. In this zoo it is unclear who should perform for whom.
Geert Belpaeme’s last production at Vooruit was the philosophical ‘First’ in 2017, a duet with composer and pianist Heleen Van Haegenborgh. Now he returns to Vooruit with the première of ‘De dieren’.
